" LE TEMPS sera venu Où LE PASSé le plus lointain de la ville prendra les couleurs de l'UTOPIE "
MONUMENTAL UTOPIAS are about re-injecting some imagination into old monuments through performance art, stories, immersive films and virtual reality, images, animated films. My goal is to bring them back to life, to a contemporary life, by incorporating the poetic vision which their architecture inspires me, so that they can have a future beyond centuries.
How can we bring a monument back to life when it is excluded from our modernity ?
After graduating from the Architecture School of Paris-Malaquais in 2008, then from the One Lab School of Urban Ecology in New York, I looked at those old monuments and wondered : what if the architectural dream of our time was actually hidden within those ancient and disused stones, whose meaning and power, lost in the dawn of time, have become indecipherable to us ?
I traveled across both France and books in order to select the monuments on which I would eventually work : the standing stones in Carnac, the Trophy of Augustus, the Jacques Coeur Palace, the If Castle, the Abbey of Jumièges, the Church of Saint Eustache, the Castle of Fleckenstein... I dreamt of those monuments and of the Men who built them. And since the true meaning of the standing stones in Carnac and the actual story of the Trophy of Augustus are lost to us, I tried to see what today's shapes could tell me. Through my sensivity as an architect, I was able to give them a fresh place within a contemporary dream journey. It is this vision, which emanates from both my dreams and my profession, that gave birth to MONUMENTAL UTOPIAS.
Those monuments indubitably hold a power we must try and find back, so that we can decrypt them to the benefit of the modern Men we are. We owe to ourselves to maintain them, to reinstate them into our time and to find them a future, so that they can live on and keep talking to us.
The story of these monuments is our story. Their future might also be ours.
