Le Rocher Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe se situe à 90 mètres au-dessus de la ville du Puy-en-Velay, dans le Massif Central. Il est la résultante d’éruptions volcaniques qui eurent lieu il y a 65 millions d’années. Le Rocher Saint-Michel fut jadis une cheminée de feu et de lave, jusqu’à la dernière ère de glaciation, il y a 2 millions d’années, qui figea ce paysage dans cette forme singulière. Longtemps les hommes crurent que les dieux avaient créé ce paysage de leurs mains…
Puis vint le temps du christianisme... Les premiers pèlerins du chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle firent le vœu de s’approcher au plus près de ciel. Ils choisirent ce pic rocheux comme une étape de leur prière et taillèrent un escalier dans la roche au sommet de laquelle ils élevèrent une chapelle dédiée à l’archange Michel, prince de la milice céleste des anges et gardien des portes du Paradis.

The Rock of Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe is located nearly 300 feet above the city of Le Puy-en-Velay, in the french Massif Central. It is the result of volcanic eruptions which occurred 65 million years ago. The Rock of Saint-Michel used to be a chimney of fire and lava, until the last ice age, two million years ago, which froze this landscape into this singular shape. For quite some time, men believed that the gods had created this landscape with their own hands...
Then came Christianity. The first pilgrims along the Way of Saint-James pledged to come as close as possible to the sky. They chose this rocky peak as a stage of their prayer and carved a staircase within the rock, at the top of which they erected a chapel dedicated to Archangel Michael, prince of the angels' celestial militia and guardian of the gates to Heaven.
